'Welcome to Life'

Perth based singer Katie Whittaker of The Red Pine Timber Company,launched her debut solo single on Monday 20th June to coincide with World Refugee Day. Welcome To Life, written and performed by Katie, will be sold via various digital outlets with all of the profits being split equally between the Refugee Council UK and The Scottish Refugee Council.

Recorded in the Stewart Room of The Salutation Hotel, Katie’s lyrics for the soulful ‘Welcome To Life’ are overflowing with hope and friendship, as she opens her heart to the young children, old women and entire families making the desperate journey from war torn Syria across Europe in hope of refuge. Katie has chosen to donate all proceeds from Welcome To Life to The Refugee Council UK and The Scottish Refugee Council. Selling through I-Tunes, Google and Bandcamp for 99p all profits will be sent straight to the charity in London who will then pass on 50% of all funds raised to Glasgow. She commented,

“It has been an emotional journey, writing, recording and working towards the release of the single and I am so grateful to my family and music industry friends who have supported me in making this possible. I have two young children, and the images of families with babies and toddlers making their way across treacherous journeys moved me so much I felt I had to do something. I really do hope everyone buys the single and helps this great cause.”

Katie, who is originally from Brora in the Highlands, moved to Perth to study music at Perth College UHI some six years ago. She met Gavin Munroe of, The Red Pine Timber Company, almost immediately on arrival and has been singing with Perth’s Americana heroes ever since. This is the first time she has recorded on her own and when she takes to the stage at Glastonbury this year, it will be her first big public outing as a solo artist. She will sing in Big Bill’s Radical Roundup, where she will be introduced by Billy Bragg and part of a set of young new political singers who have something bigger to say. Those with tickets should head to the Leftfield Stage on Sunday at around 3.30pm.
